Palliative Care
What is Palliative Care?
Palliative care is medical care focused on relief of pain, symptoms, and stress of serious illness – whatever the diagnosis. Palliative care is provided simultaneously with all other medical treatments.
How can the Palliative Care team help me and my family?
When you are on the front lines of an illness, you need answers, relief, expertise, and support. Our team of board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners, and licensed counselors makes sure that all your concerns are addressed.
Working closely with your primary doctor, we provide:
• Relief of pain and symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, breathlessness, depression and anxiety
• Respect for each patient’s values and personal choices
• Assistance and support in making difficult medical decisions
• Help in ensuring patients are as comfortable and active as possible
• Coordination of care and treatment among doctors at all stages of illness
How do I know if Palliative Care is right for me or a member of my family?
Palliative care helps through all stages of illness. It is best introduced early in your care and is provided at the same time as curative treatments. Palliative care may be especially helpful if you or your loved one:
• Has cancer, heart failure, liver, lung, kidney problems, and/or dementia
• Has pain, trouble breathing, or other distressing symptoms
• Is seriously ill and facing questions about the future
• Has difficult medical decisions to make and wants help thinking them through
How can I reach the Palliative Care team?
You, your family member, or any of your health care professionals may ask your physician to call the Palliative Care Consult line at: 336-768-3972 or 1-888-876-3663.
Is Palliative Care the same as Hospice care?
No. Hospice care is meant specifically for those approaching the last stages of life, while palliative care is appropriate for any stage of a serious illness.
