Medical Staff Services Department
Since hiring our first full-time Medical Director in 2000, our Medical Staff Services Department has grown to include 4 full-time and several part-time physicians, as well as two nurse practitioners and a department coordinator. We provide a wide variety of services for the Hospice & Palliative CareCenter as well as for our patients and their families. These services fall into six major categories:
Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home – Our physicians and nurse practitioners see each patient admitted to the Hospice Home, make rounds there daily, and are available on-call 24 hours a day. We work closely with patients, their families, and the entire KBR Interdisciplinary Team to provide the best possible inpatient hospice care.
Home Hospice Care – Many hospice patients find it hard to get out of their homes. Our physicians and nurse practitioners are available to help both patients and their physicians by providing in-home consultation for pain and symptom management. We are also available for patients new to the area and those who wish to transfer their care to a full-time hospice physician who will participate in their home care.
Palliative Care – There are many patients “not yet ready for hospice” who might benefit from consultation with one of our physicians or nurse practitioners. Our staff is available to provide palliative care – care focused on relief of pain, symptoms, and the stress of serious illness, whatever the diagnosis, provided simultaneously with all other medical treatments. Our staff can coordinate palliative care consultation in area hospitals and provide consultation in nursing homes, as well as patients’ homes and our offices.
Interdisciplinary Teams – Our physicians meet regularly with the Interdisciplinary Teams caring for all of our patients throughout our 13-county service area. We regularly discuss the care of our patients in order to insure they are receiving the best possible care and that all of their medical needs are met. We also support the Teams by offering medical information, education and consultation, as needed.
Medical Education – Our physicians are all affiliated with Wake Forest University School of Medicine and collaborate with the departments of medicine and family practice to provide regular clinical rotations for medical students and house officers. Clinical rotations under the supervision of our physicians and nurse practitioners are also available to other learners as well. In addition, our department is authorized to provide Continuing Medical Education Credits in collaboration with Novant Health and presents Grand Rounds in Hospice and Palliative Medicine twice monthly.
Research – Our physicians and nurse practitioners participate in clinical trials of new therapies of benefit to our patients. In addition, we have initiated an ambitious program to collaborate with Wake Forest University School of Medicine to promote research in multiple areas of end-of-life care.
